Deciphering a Code

Sixth graders made up their own codes and tried to teach them to one another on the sly.  I designed this activity to help them understand how difficult it was for Frederick Douglass to learn to read.  He learned to read by asking literature poor boys to teach him words in the dust.  At the time is was illegal to teach a slave to read, so all of his efforts had to be done in secret.
